Betting and Bluffing

Poker is the earliest of the games which involved betting, bluffing and hard rankings. There is evidence that a game, which is known as poque, a French game which was similar to poker was earlier played around various regions where poker was originated.  Poker closely resembles the Persian game As Nas. The name poker originates from the Irish Poca or even French Poque which means to brag as a bluff. It also shares ancestry with the Renaissance game primero and the French brelan. It is also possible that all of these earlier games influenced the development of poker as it is played nowadays. The modern school of thoughts does not believe in these ancestries. They only focus on the card play in the game; the unique features of poker are developed from many games available earlier. The feature of poker which is betting has not appeared in any older game ever played. Poker originated in mid 1700’s and was spread throughout the region of Mississippi River. This game was played in various forms, with a pack of 52 cards, and included both stud and straight poker. The draw was added in 1850’s. Also, during the civil war, many variations were introduced in the game including stud poker and the straight. The 20 card poker game was a game for two players. As the game spread north along the Mississippi River during the period of gold rush, it became a part of ethos, a frontier panel. Sometime after this, flush was introduced and the full 52 pack was introduced.
